Did anyone attend this conference sponsored by CDC's National Center for Health Marketing (NCHM) and care to share their opinion? Was it as extravagant and pointless as we all expected it to be? Note: See a related post from Junk Food Science blogJFS Special: Health marketing from the CDC

I went and it was one of the best conferences I've ever attended! The meeting was cosponsored by NCHM, OEC, NCI, and NPHIC. About 1000 people from all over the US and many other countries were there. The keynote speakers were fascinating and the breakouts were generally first rate. The hardest part was deciding which breakout sessions to attend when great sessions conflicted with each other. There is a facebook group and a ning group set up from the conference if you want to find out more about it where lots of people have posted glowing comments. Thanks to NCHM and others for this amazing experience! Not pointless at all!

This conference rocked!
Speakers included James Surowiecki (Wisdom of Crowds), Walker Smith (Yankalovich), and Sandy Thurman (former AIDS Czar). I spent 3 days with like minded professionals who believe as I do that health communication deserves more support then it currently gets.
I loved this conference and cannot wait until the next one.

Sounds like the kool-aid was served with breakfast on the first morning; and twice a day after that.

I?m a member of the facebook group they started for this conference. Here are some of the comments posted there so far on the wall:
Great conference. I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with people of like minds and interests. I can't wait to attend next year's event. Thank you!
In enjoyed the conference immensely. Hello to all the new friends I met and thank you to all the great presenters! I am looking forward to next year!
Really enjoying the conference! I'm learning a lot and meeting many new folks who are passionate about health communications, public affairs, and social marketing. Where else can you meet the Press Officer for CDC-Greece?
I really, REALLY wish I could have been down there with all of you - will live vicariously through this group and hopefully learn a few things. Definitely making plans to attend next year.

The conference was actually a good conference. I learned a lot of new things that I can use in my work tasks.
I don't think it was extravagant at all.

Never even heard of this conference and I work at CDC's Atlanta location, thus I question NCHM's "marketing" ability. Also, if the NCHM's skills are so great, how come longterm contracts and multiple task orders are constantly being issued for outside agencies to provide support to CDC Centers, Divisions and Branches, in the development of health communication materials, support products, and marketing services? At the end of the day, who does NCHM provide its fantastic services for?

Shame on all you people who continue to slander NCHM. Although I didn't go, everyone I've heard from who did said this conference was excellent. Give these guys a break and admit that they've done a lot of good things over these last 2-3 years. No one at CDC is perfect including NCHM, but I respect that these guys have taken lots and lots and lots of arrows from every direction, yet they keep on trying to do their best. Congrats to NCHM for another successful program. Keep your heads up and keep on pushing us all forward!

When someone posts such an unbalanced and irrational remark such as "as extravagant and pointless as we all expected it to be", the remark speaks for itself. The conference was excellent, stimulating, and a real indication of just how far this new Center has come and will go.
We need new approaches to promoting health and to those who think they already have the answers, I would ask: why do we have increasing or steady disease rates in critical areas? Why do health disparities persist? Because what we are doing now or yesterday is what we need to continue to do? If the private sector had this attitude, we'd still be at the horse and buggy stage. Wake up: it's the twenty-first century.

Good for NCHM that they get some positive remarks.
As for the original poster...How exhausting to hear the continued derision.

I totally agree! The conference was awesome! Their was one problem though...No Power Points (for the most part). Has anyone heard about the possibility of them posting the power points for participants information?

Here is a less positive view of the conference as marketing, not science. Note what this blog says about the website of one of the sponsors.
It would be interesting to see people's comments on this entry..

Hmm. I wonder how many of these posts were JG or JB boys or girls.
I hear that they had to beat the CDC bushes at the last minute to fill 100s of slots to get the appearance of a "full" conference. I understand that outside attendance was way down from last year. Does that mean outside participants (like me!) didn't want to come back??
I heard very mixed reactions, but mostly negative. Perhaps the conference committee can post the evaluations. Would be interesting to see by organizational affiliation.
